Nicknames

Nicknames may be cool, cute or funny. Nicknames are different than pet names in that nicknames are usually more public and given by someone without a romantic or familial interest in that person.

Cool nicknames are many times given in the sporting arena. Who can forget cool nicknames such as "Pistol Pete", "Broadway Joe", "Shoeless Joe" or "Mr. October"? Then there are other cool nicknames in sports such as "The Mailman", "The Yankee Clipper" and "The Big Hurt".

Some cool nicknames are screen names that people use online when participating on blogs or message boards.

Cool nicknames such as "Day Tripper", "Vanilla Latte" or "Fugly Bitch" can be found around almost any corner of code.

Nicknames can also be cute. These cute nicknames may sometimes overlap with the pet names, but most times will stand on their own. Cute nicknames online like "Puppy Love", "I Got U Babe" and "Pretty in Pink" abound.

But, offline, cute nicknames are a bit harder to come by since people do not usually give themselves nicknames and at the mercy of others to come up with the perfect name. That said, there are a few cute nicknames that can be given to the right person such as "Ducky", "Birdie" or "Lil Squirt".

Funny nicknames are easier to come by both online and off. The problem with funny nicknames, however, are that they may be funnier to the giver than to the receiver. A funny nickname such as "Stinky" may be humorous to the giver and the receiver's friends and family, but to the receiver this name may mean years of ridicule and angst.

The most friendly funny nicknames are those that happen to have some truth to them and are funny to the giver, receiver and those who know the receiver. For instance, calling a small child "Goose" or "Maverick" may have some element of truth in them and be fun for the whole family. Calling a child "Booger Nose" or "Poop Head" may be interpreted and verbal child abuse and result in a visit from the local Social Services and Child Welfare agency.
